US National Championships
BE STILL, MY BEATING HEART!
It’s taken me a few days to collect my thoughts. Especially after the mind fuck that was last year’s disturbing Nationals. So let’s get into it…
PEWTER- Armin Mabadoozedah
I was a fan of Armin’s programs last season. However, I can’t help but shake my head at what he has to offer this time around. I especially want to love his long so badly. I adore Kill Bill and thought, “this program must be badass”. WRONG. SO VERY WRONG. He looks so fragile on the ice and hasn’t given a single performance worthy of the strong music selection. I love to see him skate with conviction. I know it’s only been about seven weeks since he left Priscilla. So, let’s hope he can pull it together for next season.
BRONZE- Ross Miner
I’m starting to wake up and maybe even accept the idea that Ross can be a real competitor. Sure, he lacks artistry but I have noticed an improvement from his sleep inducing performances from last season. I do think that steady can win the race in the end. If nothing else, placing 3rd again is a steady move. I’ve been looking online to see if he had beaten last years score. So far I’ve found nada. Anyone?
Silver- Adam Rippon
FINALLY, DEAR GOD. I was starting to get concerned. I adore Adam’s artistry but hate both his programs this year (go figure). I was still thrilled to see him not freak out on us this Championship. I also enjoyed his odd Truth Booth moment shown by NBC. He said he planned to go eat some soup and felt like destroying something. However you wanna get down is your business. You deserve it.
Gold- Jeremy Abbott
THE KING HAS RECLAIMED THE THROWN & HONEY…YOU SHOULD SEE HIM IN A CROWN. I must admit it was difficult for me to watch Nationals this year because Jeremy did so outstanding in the free skate. I was filled with trepidation because I know his pattern of rising only to crash misreably under the pressure. I hate to say it but I expected to be disappointed. This man has tested my faith in him so many times and just when I start to flinch, BAM. He suckerpunches me & the rest of the skating world to remind us never to doubt him. I enjoy being proved wrong and I thank him for the swift kick in the ass.
Other thoughts:
The fact that Detroit Skating Club pretty much owned these Championships with their flawless skaters on the podiums was pure brillance. I know this means more students for Yuka & Jason next season. Also, the BROing that occurred between Jeremy & Adam was too precious for words. I’m so happy for them all and hope they revel in these beautiful moments…and then twitpic any hugs.
Also, I wish I knew people that were into figure skating. It’s so hard to go through these emotional times alone. I couldn’t even virtually high five anyone when Jeremy won. It was still amazing though.
